DEE WHY — Dee Why and Long Reef Beaches were closed this afternoon and rescue helicopters called after it was reported that a shark attacked a surfboard.

The Daily Telegraph reported that Danny Sheather, 23-year-old off duty lifeguard, was surfing between Dee Why and Long Reef Beaches when he felt a knock against his board that pushed him to his knees.

When he arrived to the shore, Mr Sheather noticed a large gash to the bottom of his surfboard.

The Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter later reported that a 2.5 meter shark had been sighted beyond the surf break at Dee Why Beach.  The Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter and Surf Life Saving NSW are both working to move the shark along.

It is expected that local beaches will remain closed for the rest of the day.
